Some\u00a0drugs change the environment in which nutrients are absorbed and\u00a0have the potential to cause nutrient deficiencies\u00a0over time. For example, nutrients that require an acidic environment in the gut for optimal absorption can be depleted if the\u00a0stomach environment\u00a0is changed by medications.<\/p>\n
Calcium requires an acidic environment for optimal absorption. People who take an acid suppressor like esomeprazole (Nexium<\/i>) can have reduced calcium absorption. More on this in the discussion to follow.<\/p>\n
Some drugs have the potential to affect kidney function or otherwise change how the body might handle elimination of a particular nutrient.<\/p>\n
Loop diuretics, like\u00a0Furosemide,\u00a0cause increased fluid and electrolyte loss by changing the kidneys work. Therefore, they can cause depletion of potassium and other nutrients. More on this in the discussion to follow.<\/p>\n
In some cases, drugs change\u00a0the body\u00a0in a way that might change how\u00a0it uses certain nutrients or change how the body activates nutrients. For example,\u00a0Simvastatin (Zocor), affects\u00a0the production of cholesterol in the body by using up enzyme\u00a0CoQ10.\u00a0Enzyme CoQ10 is needed in the body for its anti-oxidant properties and the lack of this enzyme can cause the side effects associated with Simvastatin such as muscle\u00a0aches and pains.<\/p>\n
Here is a list of some\u00a0common\u00a0medications, the nutrients they deplete, and\u00a0what can be taken to\u00a0replenish them:<\/p>\n
Aspirin and NSAIDs<\/strong> (like\u00a0Ibuprofen): Deplete iron. What you can do<\/strong>: Eat iron-rich foods such as red meat, egg yolks, beans, turkey, etc.<\/p>\n Carbamazepine, <\/b>Corticosteroids, <\/i><\/b>Phenobarbital, <\/b>Phenytoin, and <\/b>Primidone: <\/b>Depletes calcium, vitamin D, and Vitamin K. What you can do:<\/strong> Take supplemental doses of calcium and vitamin D (ask the pharmacist for the specific dose recommended for your age and gender) and eat green leafy vegetables for vitamin K replacement.<\/p>\n H2 blockers (Ranitidine, Famotidine, Cimetidine) and <\/b>PPIs (Nexium, Protonix, Aciphex, and Prevacid): <\/b>Deplete vitamin B12. What you can do:<\/strong> Consider supplementing with B Complex or sublingual B12 especially if feeling sluggish or less energized.<\/p>\n Furosemide and HCTZ: <\/strong>Deplete magnesium and potassium. What you can do:<\/strong> May need to supplement potassium and magnesium by askign your doctor to check your blood.<\/p>\n Metformin<\/strong>: <\/strong>Depletes folic acid. What you can do:<\/strong> Take over the counter folic acid or ask your doctor.<\/p>\n <\/i>Statins (Crestor, Lipitor, Pravastatin, and\u00a0Lovastatin): <\/strong>Depletes enzyme CoQ10 (the primary cause of muscle pain and weakness from these medications). What you can do:<\/strong> Everyone can benefit from taking enzyme CoQ10 regardless of depletion. It is a potent anti-oxidant and energy booster.
